Youngsters prove themselves 'Language Olympians'
Budding young linguists from a Preparatory school in Ealing proved themselves to be ‘tres bon’ after taking part in this year’s ‘All European Language Olympics’.
Ten pupils from Year Six at Clifton Lodge School participated in the competition, which took place over three weeks in September and October, to coincide with the Commonweath Games.
The All European Language Olympics is an intense online competition, where students learn vocabulary, verbs and common phrases from a wide range of foreign languages. They are then able to compete against other schools around the world. Clifton Lodge, which teaches boys and girls aged 4-13 in Ealing, took part in the French Language Olympics and enjoyed great success.
This year, 124 schools around Europe took part in the linguistic challenge. Clifton Lodge achieved excellent results, coming fourth in ‘Student Average for All Languages’ and second in ‘Student Average for French’. Five pupils attained a ‘Bronze Medal’ certificate for scoring over 1000 points, and a further two pupils achieved a ‘Credit certificate’ for gaining over 500 points.
Commenting on the pupils’ enthusiasm for the competition, French teacher, Lucie Taylor said:
"It really promoted languages here at Clifton Lodge and engaged our pupils, who became very excited about language learning. It also made them very competitive!"
Following on from this year’s success, all senior pupils will take place in next year's competition, which will take place in September, to coincide with the Rugby World Cup.
