WPO Welcomes Vince Cables Calls for Stronger Economic Ties Between India and Britain
The World Punjabi Organisation has welcomed calls for stronger economic ties between India and Britain.
Vince Cable announced the new coalition government’s intention to reinforce economic relations between India and Britain earlier this month.
The bold statement formed part of an encouraging speech made by Mr. Cable during the 10th Anniversary Gala Celebrations of the World Punjabi Organisation (European Division), held at the Inter-Continental Hotel, Park Lane, London on October 17.
Mr. Cable, who was guest of honour at the awards, told an audience of over 400 guests - which included speakers from India and Canada - about his long-standing personal links with India and commended the enterprise of the Punjabi community.
He went on to say:
“The British Coalition Government is determined to strengthen the economic ties between India and Britain”.
Andrew Feldman, co-chairman of the Conservative Party who also attended the awards brought best wishes from Prime Minister, David Cameron. Also present was a brochure to commemorate the 10th anniversary containing messages of support from Nick Clegg, Eric Pickles and Shri IK Gujral; former Prime Minister of India and founder of the World Punjabi Organisation (WPO).
Mr. Feldman expressed regret for the missed opportunities to work more closely with India over recent years and called upon the British Punjabi community to help contribute to the economic recovery of the country by building up businesses within the private sector.
Ranjit Baxi, President of the WPO (European Division) thanked Mr. Cable, whose presence just days before the important ‘Government Spending Review’ statement he said “demonstrated the government’s support for the Punjabi Community”.
Mr. Baxi went on to acknowledge the members’ achievements over the past decade and explained that Punjabis in Britain were ready to help support the growth and prosperity of the country. However, he made it clear that much work still needed to be done; particularly during a time of economic difficulty when everyone needed to pull together.
The WPO is a non-political body of internationally-renowned Punjabis that was formally launched on January 10, 1998. More information can be found at http://wpoeurope.com/
