Wasdale challenge will be triathletes’ career pinnacle
Wasdale in West Cumbria – already a place of extremes – is set to host the ultimate ‘half ironman’ distance challenge.
The area is home to Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, Wastwater, the deepest lake, and St Olaf’s, the smallest church. Now adventure Challenge Solutions (ACS), has announced that the Wasdale Triathlon will take place on 30 September.
The 1.2 mile swim in Wast Water, a seriously steep 56 mile bike ride, and 13.1 mile run over Scafell Pike is by far the toughest triathlon in the country, according to Davy Newell of ACS, which also organises Tri Windermere.
“Only the intrepid need apply. We have dreamed about this event for years, and had to keep it under wraps. It’s taken a long time to get everything absolutely perfect – it’s the perfect storm,” said Davy.
“This event really is only for the seriously committed, and the application process will reflect this. Our rescue team will be tighter and sharper than ever, and we expect competitors to be at their absolute peak of fitness and properly trained.”
Aspiring competitors will have to complete a qualifying course to prove their fitness for the event proper.
Davy added: “People have been asking us what kind of event to compare it to, and the short answer is, there is no comparison. Wasdale is staggeringly beautiful, and you’ll be swimming in incredibly deep water.”
“The cycle route will see you achieving things that you never thought possible in Tri, and to run up England’s highest mountain after swimming the deepest lake has got to be a triathlete’s career pinnacle.”
Wasdale Triathlon will take place on 30 September and entries open on 1 April.
