Walk This Way to Better Fitness
People across Birmingham will have the opportunity to become fitter and healthier over the coming months – with the introduction of 70 new free group health walks.
Exercise, such as walking, can reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke, reduce the risk of type 2 Diabetes and can also help those with Diabetes keep it under control - to name just a few of the many benefits.
Health Exchange CIC has teamed up with Heart of Birmingham Primary Care Trust (HoB PCT) and the BeActive initiative to offer people of all ages, ability and backgrounds the chance to increase their exercise in a fun and motivational way.
"Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but walking also allows people a chance to socialise and interact with neighbours they wouldn’t normally see." Debra Stanley, walks co-ordinator.
The new Health Walks programme will include up to 70 walks – covering the pan Birmingham area. The walks average 2km and will take between 30 minutes to 1 hour each.
The Walks Programme operates Monday to Friday and anybody is welcome to take part. Each walk takes place in a motivational group setting to encourage continued walking. It can also improve your mental well being and encourage social interaction within the community.
Walks are led by trained Walk Leaders, from designated sites, at fixed days and times and are accredited by a National Scheme to ensure safety. All routes are mapped and risk assessed. All walks start and finish at GP surgeries, community sites and parks.
The service is for everyone, regardless of ability and age. The walks all take place on paths and pavements, and therefore also provide accessibility to wheel chair users. Those wishing to get involved can either join one of the walks, or even receive training to lead a walk themselves. Volunteers will all be CRB-checked (Criminal Records Bureau) and will be given full Walk Leader Training and ongoing support.
Health Exchange is a social enterprise dedicated to encouraging people to make positive choices to improve their health and wellbeing. Working directly with individuals, and through local community organisations, primary care centres, GP practices and pharmacies we provide information, signposting and support to enable people to choose a healthier lifestyle.
