Varicose veins be gone
Thousands of people suffer with varicose veins, which can often be painful and unsightly. What’s more, these sufferers face a variety of choices for treatment – so, which is the most effective?
Traditional solutions such as chemical treatments, surface laser therapy and surgery can leave patients with pain, aches, swelling and discoloured skin.
With surgery, patients can have permanent scars, infections and a risk of heart or breathing problems, or even a deep vein clot.
Thanks to advances in modern technology, the problem can now be easily tackled with simple procedures, which can get a patient back on their feet in less than an hour.
An increasingly popular choice is the VNUS Closure procedure. This option is a minimally invasive, walk-in, walk-out procedure, with less pain and bruising when compared to traditional vein stripping surgery and laser treatment.
Using the Closure system, physicians close the diseased veins by inserting a catheter into a vein and heating the vein wall, using temperature-controlled RF energy.
Heating the vein wall causes collagen in the wall to shrink and the vein to close.
After the vein is sealed shut, blood naturally reroutes to healthy veins and the whole process takes just 30 minutes.
The product was developed by VNUS Medical Technologies. For more information visit: http://vnus.co.uk
Another modern treatment is the VenaCure EVLT. This is another alternative to vein stripping, which uses a diode laser fibre. Under local anaesthetic, the fibre is inserted into the vein and delivers a precise dose of energy to collapse the vein wall.
