TOTAL POOL HELPS CLEAR THE WAY FOR OLYMPIC SWIMMING HOPEFULS
Total Pool Chemicals is helping to keep it clean for swimmers training at the Wales National Pool in Swansea, as they prepare to go for gold at the 2012 Olympic Games.
The Chester-based company has been called in to keep the competition pool’s waters crystal clear for swimmers, including the Olympic hopefuls, using its innovative environmentally friendly Eco Glass Filter Media (EGFM).
The 50m Wales National Pool in Swansea has been selected as an Intensive Training Centre for elite swimmers by British Swimming, with hopes Swansea will become a breeding ground for gold medallists in the London 2012 Olympics.
Along with the Olympic athletes, the pool also caters for a very wide range of users including; aqua-natal, parent and toddlers, children and adults of all ages.
Total Pool Chemicals has been working with the centre to optimise water quality, by replacing the existing sand in their pool water filters.
Research conducted by Swansea University into the effectiveness of different types of filter material has led to the Wales National Pool investing in the special eco glass filter material.
After achieving impressive results on the centre’s training pool, Total Pool then replaced the filter material in the competition pool - with equally impressive results.
EGFM is made with a patented British process which takes domestic glass collections and produces a smooth, safe glass. This can be used to filter water in many applications including swimming pools.
Using this recycled material eliminates the use of intrusive mining and the use of scarce resources, hence doing its bit for the environment.
Along with its green credentials, EGFM has many benefits over the traditional filter material, silica sand. Bacteria doesn’t grow on the surface of EGFM, as it is a much harder and smoother material than silica sand. This makes a pool easier to clean, producing sparkling clear water for users.
Mr Thomas, Pool Engineer at Wales National Pool, said:
"Having good water quality and clarity is essential with so many international competitions being held in the Wales National Pool. Since the switch to EGFM, this has definitely improved. But it’s not just the water quality that is a benefit of using EGFM, it’s cost effective and requires less upkeep.”
