The clock struck wonderful - the return of the grandfather clock

The traditional grandfather clock is shrugging of its fusty image.

The iconic clocks have had a revamp and are now available in funky designs - harking back to Art Deco times. They have also been renamed 'floor clocks' to appeal to a younger generation of interior-design conscious consumers.

Premiership footballers and celebrities from stage and TV have already snapped them up and, due to the re-emergence of quality, traditional style furniture, sales are expected to soar by 50 per cent in the next year.

Manchester-based MSS Watch Company is the only UK distributor of the clocks which are made by the Howard Miller Clock Company, famous for producing bubble lamps in the 1960s.

Some of the new clocks bare little resemblance to the 'grandfather' clocks of the past. The 'Tempo', pictured, has an aluminium frame and is supported on a modern round-weighted base.
