SWITCHED-ON COMPANY SHINES DOWN-UNDER
Australian power bosses have given the green light to an energy-saving street light, developed by a Birmingham based lighting manufacturer.
Candela Light’s 42watt compact fluorescent Toorak has been given the thumbs-up by authorities ‘Down Under.’ It is now hoped that the product will be snapped-up by increasing numbers of cost-conscious councils, which need to switch from using Mercury lamps.
Before 2011, all pedestrian-level lighting in Australia was provided by 80watt Mercury Vapour lamps. However, the Government’s Office of Sustainability issued a mandate stating that, after December 31, 2010, Mercury would no longer meet the Australian Standard.
As a result, Candela re-engineered its Australian products and created a range of low energy lanterns - with the 42watt Toorak being the flagship.
Now the Toorak has the accolade of being the first decorative, low-energy, pedestrian lamp approved in the Australian market.
This was done by designing and developing a clip-in unit to house the lamp and control gear. Due to the clever design of the unit, it offers the benefit of being able to fit into existing luminaries already in place. The Toorak is used extensively in housing developments and in areas where there is a need for public lighting.
Candela Light’s new low-energy street light has seen sales double for the company.
Nigel Astley, Managing Director of Candela Light, is delighted with his company’s new product:
“We pride ourselves on our design and manufacturing excellence. Now we are delighted to have played a part in helping our partner in Australia to meet its green targets.
The new lamp uses about half the energy of the 80watt version with no loss in performance and it is already in strong demand. A real benefit is that it is possible to convert, or retrofit, all the existing 80watt lamps – of which there are many thousands in Victoria alone.”
“The cost of doing this, including installation, is less than half the cost of a new, replacement, top-entry lamp. This is real progress, an affordable and simple, low-energy retrofit programme, without the need to replace existing public lighting assets.” - added Mr Astley.
Councils can now simply upgrade their existing lighting, without the need of expensive replacements.
