School Pupils Learn the Bear Necessities

Avid bear hunters were in for a big surprise when they ventured deep into the woods near their school.

Pre-prep pupils at Milbourne Lodge didn’t ‘paws’ for a moment when they were asked if they wanted to go on a bear-hunting adventure. The delighted youngsters were rewarded for their efforts when they found some furry friends to bring back to school.

The trip was organised by chief bear hunter David Payne, head of Milbourne Lodge Pre-Prep in Esher. Despite a spot of wet weather, the walk was declared a resounding success.

Pupils pulled on their wellies and raincoats and set off through the squelchy grass and mud to see what they could find. Although they didn’t spot any real bears lurking behind the trees, they each found a lovely teddy to take home with them before trekking back to school for a well-deserved tea.

“It was a wonderful afternoon and we were delighted with the turnout, given the rain!” said Mr Payne.

“The children all had a fantastic time and were so excited. This is the first event like this that we have held at the school since we opened the doors to our pre-prep department in 2009 and we hope to do many more.”
