School children pay respect to armed forces
Children from a local school paid their respects to the armed forces at the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony at Greenhead Park, in Huddersfield.
Pupils from Year 2 of Huddersfield Grammar School braved the wind and rain to join local veterans at the event last Thursday, where the Head Boy and Girl of the Preparatory and Senior Schools laid wreaths in memory of current and ex-servicemen on the school's behalf.
Greenhead Park spokesman, Chris Smith, who organised the Service, thanked the children for coming to the park in such appalling weather and “making 2010 the most well attended Remembrance Service for a long time.”
Janet Straughan, Head Teacher at Huddersfield Grammar School, stressed how important it is that children understand the meaning and history of such occasions: "In a world where the ‘merely sensational’ is too often celebrated, it is important that our children learn to recognise and respect true heroism and self-sacrifice."
Huddersfield Grammar School children attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony every year and have been raising money for The Royal British Legion by selling poppies in the run-up to Remembrance Sunday.
