SAY CHEESE – DELICATESSEN TO OFFER UNIQUE ST. PATRICKS DAY CELEBRATION

A Midlands-based farm shop is to offer customers the chance to celebrate St. Patricks day with a range of five Irish cheeses – each with a story to tell.

Beckett’s Farm Delicatessen has chosen to offer the five cheeses in order to support the producers, as well as get the stories behind them heard.

The cheeses are: Cashel Blue, Coolea, St Killian, Gubbeen Farmhouse cheese and Ardrahan. Deli Manager, Gavin Taylor is excited about the idea, ‘We have a huge range of cheeses at Becketts and the stories behind their production are often truly inspirational and definitely worth celebrating’.

Here are stories of two of the cheeses:

Cashel Blue - semi-soft mild blue cheese, is made by hand on the Farm of Louis and Jane Grubb in Tipperary. As early as the 1950s the Grubb family were producing dairy based products on their farm.

Before meeting Louis, Jane had worked as a chef and maintained a love of quality food. Jane and Louis identified that there was a gap in the Irish market for blue cheese. While Danish Blue sold well in Ireland, there was no native equivalent. Jane set about developing a blue cheese and, in 1984Cashel Blue was born.

Starting from this small production base Cashel Blue has steadily grown and today has far flung markets with availability as far afield as Tokyo, The Napa Valley, California, Hawaii, and Melbourne, Australia. Over the years this cheese has won more than 25 awards including Gold in the world cheese awards.
