ON YOUR BIKES! HEROES PEDAL TO PIER FOR CHARITY
A marathon cycle ride in aid of three exceptionally worthwhile charities is to take place on Saturday 31st July.
Starting from the Bagot Arms, Erdington, Birmingham, the ride will cover a total of 112 miles and finish at the Grand Pier, Weston-Super-Mare. The riders are expected to take approximately eight hours to complete the course, raising over £2000 for their chosen charities.
A total of six riders will be taking part, four from Birmingham and two from Weston-Super-Mare, including organiser Ian Lawton who will be riding in aid of the British Lung Foundation.
Ian said “In 2003, I underwent emergency surgery at the Heartland Hospital in Birmingham after the sudden collapse of both of my lungs. Half of my right lung was removed in the operation. Since then I have made a remarkable recovery and I would like to give something back”.
In 2008 Ian took up cycling, and just two short years later he feels ready enough to not only take up the challenge of a 112-mile ride, but to also organise it himself.
Two other very worthwhile causes will also benefit from the event. Help for Heroes, which provides support for members of the British armed forces who have been wounded while serving their country, and the Charlotte Louise Fletcher Memorial Fund for Epilepsy Research UK.
The fund is named in memory of Charlotte Louise Fletcher, who died from an epileptic seizure in 2006 at just nine years of age. Epilepsy Research UK is the only national charity in the UK which funds independent research into the causes, treatments and prevention of epilepsy.
Spectators and wellwishers should begin to arrive at the Bagot Arms from 8.30am, for a 9.30am start.
