New Record Sets the Pace in Morecambe Charity Run
The organisers of the UK gathering of a global charity run are celebrating, after raising thousands of pounds for worthy causes.
‘Run 4 The World’ proved to be a massive success, raising £2,400 on the day, and a further £1500 is expected to come from collection boxes and corporate sponsorship funds yet to be handed in.
The 5th annual edition of the event, which took place on May 7, smashed its record for participants, as 258 runners took part this year. These kind-hearted runners took part in a five or ten kilometre dash along Morecambe Promenade, to help raise much-needed funds for two good causes.
This year, the UK run was supporting Ambassadors in Sport, which uses football to help children re-engage with education around the world. In addition, the run raised money for Christians Against Poverty, a national debt-counselling charity, with a network of 150 centres based in local churches.
Martin Bateman, from Run 4 The World, said: “We started with ten people in 2007, and the run this year was the biggest ever in numbers and was a great family event. It was fantastic to see both the young and old taking part.”
The eldest competitor on the day was an incredible 93 years old, whilst the youngest, who was carried around the course, was aged just eight months.
“It’s only a short distance, but it goes a long way to helping the disadvantaged, locally and around the world. It has just been a massive success and I would like to thank everyone who helped to make it such a successful event”, added Mr Bateman.
Representatives from the two charities took part on the day, and gave an insight about what their organisations do to impact people’s lives.
