Muay Thai boxers prepare to do battle in Bolton
BOLTON is not the first place that comes to mind when discussing the ancient Thai martial art of ‘Muay Thai’ boxing.
‘Muay Thai’ is often referred to as “The Art of the Eight Limbs”, as the hands, shins, elbows and knees are all used to strike an opponent using the eight “points of contact” - as opposed to the “two points” (fists) that are used in Western boxing and the “four points” (fists and feet) that are used in other martial art forms.
The sport is becoming increasingly popular in the UK and following the success of ‘Rumble at the Reebok II’ and ‘Rising at the Reebok’; both held at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium earlier this year; fighters from around the world are set to slug it out once again at next month’s event - ‘Rumble at the Reebok III’.
The event, which has been organised by Manchester-based ‘Fight Inc.’, will showcase the talents of some of the North West’s best Muay Thai fighters, some of whom will do battle with national champions from Greece and even Thailand itself.
As well as a number of carefully matched A and B class fights; bouts to look out for are the European Muay Thai Champion, Daitan Jackson, fighting in the most talked about re-match of the year against Ben Barwise (whom he lost to in Rumble at the Reebok II) and the North West Area Muay Thai Champion, Cassie Robinson, who is up against Lucy Payne for the British title.
International bouts will include British Muay Thai Champion, Paul Karpowicz, fighting the Greek National Champion, Lukasz Przypek and two-time World Muay Thai Champion, Frankie Hudders, who comes out of retirement to fight the Thai National Champion, Prathet Sor Thanikul.
Having recently been recognised as “the future of Muay Thai boxing” by senior figureheads within the sport, ‘Fight Inc.’ has prepared spectators to expect an “even bigger, louder and better show than the last one”.
Champion UFC fighter, Michael Bisping, said:
“We are all very excited about the event. The ‘Rumble at the Reebok’ is the best Muay Thai show in the country and it only gets bigger and better every year!”
