“Move over The Apprentice” say local pupils
With the world of work beckoning, pupils at a school in Slough have been proving themselves to be the perfect recruits.
Eager Year 10 students at Long Close School, Upton, took part in a morning of workshops, learning vital employment skills under the watchful eye of the Army. The ‘Skills for Life’ sessions were part of the work experience placements organised for Long Close pupils by East Berkshire Education Business Partnership (EBEBP).
The pupils learned about the ins and outs of workplace protocol through a series of Apprentice-style tasks, including a “dress to impress” exercise, which saw two groups dress a mannequin with appropriate clothing for designated working environments. They were also given a variety of workplace scenarios and shown how to resolve a range of issues that could arise at work.
Meanwhile, the Army Diversity Action Team, led by Warrant Officer Ashok Kumar Chauhan MBE, was drafted in to give students an insight into career opportunities within the Armed Forces.
Headteacher of Long Close School, David Brazier, said: “We know the importance of helping pupils prepare for working life, from examination success to the softer, but still vital, life skills. These sessions were part of our enrichment programme for senior pupils, designed to develop their leadership skills and personal initiative.”
Mr Brazier added: “Our thanks go to EBEBP for arranging this excellent ‘Skills for Life’ activity. The pupils came away from the session with a much greater understanding of what to expect in the workplace.”
Fully prepared, the Year 10 class will now go on to complete work experience placements in March.
