Local children treat the elderly to a healthy tea
BUDDING young chefs at Long Close School, in Upton, Berkshire celebrated National School Meals Week by putting their culinary skills to the test for the Langley Luncheon Club.
The youngsters prepared and delivered a healthy tea to members of the Age Concern group to take home after their luncheon club get-together this Tuesday (9th).
Sarah Page, a representative of Langley Luncheon Club said:
“It is lovely to see young people maintaining continuity and doing something for older people in the community. It was apparent by the way they spoke to people here that they were very happy to be involved."
On the menu were fresh chicken fillet salad sandwiches and salmon & cucumber sandwiches, both on brown bread, followed by fresh fruit salad and Greek yoghurt for dessert.
The menu, which was based on food that the children like to eat at school, was personally designed, cooked and prepared by pupils with the help of school chef, Gill Kauppila.
With the emphasis on using fresh, healthy ingredients, it was hoped that not only would the luncheon club members receive a satisfying tea but pupils from the school would also learn about the importance of healthy eating.
David Brazier, Head Teacher of Long Close School said:
"Long Close is keen to reach out to the local community and we are particularly concerned with the elderly population of Slough who are often forgotten and lonely. We want to engage with them and draw upon their experience and wisdom."
Long Close School has an established relationship with the Langley Luncheon Club, where pupils are regularly involved in events for the members.
