Lakes to host challenging sports events in Olympic summer
A programme of new challenging events for trail runners, open water swimmers and intrepid walkers will take place in the Lake District National Park in 2012, to mark a year of British sports.
The season starts with the second annual Great Langdale Trail Run which will be held on 16 June in the heart of the Lake District, following the success of last year’s launch event.
Organisers Adventure Challenge Solutions (ACS) and Run 3 believe the inaugural event was so popular among trail runners that it has already become a favourite of the running calendar. The trail run incorporates a 10 kilometre, a half marathon and also a walk.
Runners and walkers will cover varied trail terrain, keeping people off the main highways to enjoy the exceptional scenery of the famous twin valleys of Great Langdale and Little Langdale.
With a fully way-marked route, water stations and experienced marshalls, the Ron Hill Great Langdale Trail Run is suitable for runners of all abilities.
Davy Newell, Director of ACS Events commented: “The event quickly established itself as a firm favorite for those who enjoy a run on the wild side and the stunning Great Langdale Valley.”
On Saturday 6 June, open water swimmers will celebrate a return to the water at the Spring Dip at Brockhole, where The Lake District Visitor Centre is hosting a fun-packed swimming event.
Davy Newell said: “Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or wanting to join in with Olympic fever and try a new sport, the Spring Dip is the perfect event to dust off your wetsuit and jump in.”
Sunday 15 July will see the long awaited Salmon Run take its place in the the ACS calendar of events. Exciting new one-mile and two-mile upstream open water swims will challenge the more adventurous open water swimmers.
One-mile adventure swimmers will begin at Fell Foot Park, and be ferried across Windermere from Fell Foot to Lakeside, where rubber-clad competitors will jump aboard the Haverthwaite steam train. After taking the Swan Hotel stop, they will leap in the water and battle the current upstream back to Fell Foot.
To round off the season, the Petzl NAO Pitch Black Night Run will be launched in the dark of Grizedale Forest on Saturday 27 October. The event has never been attempted before and competitors will wear new head-torches, making the run especially exciting – and visually stunning. More details will be released shortly.
