Green Finger Fun at Milbourne Lodge School

More than 200 children, parents and staff braved the winter chill in aid of a family gardening day to commemorate the school’s newly created Centenary Garden.

The pupils from Milbourne Lodge School in Claygate, arrived with their spades, rakes and Wellington boots to take part in the ‘Get Your Grown-Ups Growing’ event for the Royal Horticultural Society’s Campaign for School Gardening, which took place November 26.

The green-fingered children put their creative and constructive skills to good use, by starting their latest project: an eco-greenhouse created from 2012 Coca Cola bottles in commemoration of Milbourne Lodge School’s centenary next year.

Throughout the day, the children had the chance to write their thoughts and wishes on individual ‘leaves’ that were placed on a ‘Thought Tree,’ which grew in size as the day progressed without the involvement of a watering can or the sun.

Pupils had created their own gifts to sell on their Gift Stall and the ‘Friends of Milbourne Lodge’ provided drinks and snacks throughout the day.

Milbourne Lodge Headteacher, Stephen Ilett, said: “We are so lucky to have a very talented and creative Art and ICT department who came up with this wonderful idea of building our own eco-friendly greenhouse. This was a wonderful day, which brought the whole school community together. Not only was it a huge amount of fun for all involved, but it has given the children, and us adults too, the experience of doing something completely different.”

Lunch was kindly provided by the local Waitrose store in Esher, which generously supported this event. The lunch rolls were filled with salad leaves grown by the children in the Centenary Garden, and picked freshly that morning.
