'Golden Generation' of Cricketers Show their Mettle

Pupils at a school in Slough ended a successful cricket season by reaching the finals of the Berkshire Cup.

Long Close's ‘Golden Generation’ of cricketers battled an older team, the Reading Blue Coats, after an amazing run that saw them defeat several schools, including Clare's Court, Slough Grammar and Edgebarrow.

At the final, the Long Close team lost out to the older squad, despite batting beautifully against some very fast bowling.

David Brazier, Head Teacher of Long Close said: “It would be churlish to criticise any of our bowlers, most of whom were in Years 5 and 6, and no-one could be faulted for effort. In the final analysis, Long Close was beaten by a better, stronger and older team, but what respect they have won for their achievements this season!”

Long Close, an independent, co-educational school for pupils aged 2-16, in Upton Court Road, Slough, has always been well known for its sporting prowess, but in recent years has seen a surge in cricketing achievements.

In his speech, Berkshire cricket organiser, Dennis Wright, commended Long Close for the way they had played the game, and the talent coming through the team. Singled out for praise, were Dhiraj Khuller and Crawford Wilson, who put on a 30 run stand for the first wicket. Dhiraj played the shot of the day, whilst Crawford made a classy 24. At the end of the 20 overs, Long Close had made a grand total of 113 for 5.
