Former NHS manager enjoys success as Portsmouth networking franchisee

A former NHS manager was so impressed with a business networking group – he bought the franchise.

John Inwood, who was technical manager in the estates and facilities department of West London Mental Health NHS Trust, was introduced to Business for Breakfast eight months ago.

He was so surprised with how effective referred business is; he decided to invest in the Portsmouth franchise of Business for Breakfast and now runs the event at the Solent Hotel and Spa in Fareham.

Professionals meet at 7am every fortnight at the hotel and the sessions – which include breakfast – end at 8.30am.

“Networking wasn’t a concept or business practice I was aware of at the time but always one to give something a go, I accepted an invitation to attend a group,” he explained.

“I have always tried to keep an open mind in most aspects of my working life, especially since originating from a public service background.

“After attending the first meeting, I was converted and it has since changed my whole perspective on starting my own business and self marketing.”

Mr Inwood, who is now regional director of Business for Breakfast after spending 12 years in the public sector, said referred business can benefit professionals and companies because it provides warm contacts from well-connected business people.

Good business contacts are more likely to be generated by meeting someone face to face, rather than through cold calling, he added.

“It has given me a greater amount of self confidence, motivation and helped me gain business contacts and valuable friendships that I can call upon for support,” commented Mr Inwood.

Now a successful networker, Mr Inwood offers these top five tips for effective connecting:
