Cloak Your Number to Keep Yourself Safe
Handing your number out to someone you’ve just met can sometimes be a daunting prospect, particularly for those using dating sites, or for university students, away from home for the first time.
If, after the first date, your handsome prince turns out to be not quite so charming, it’s not uncommon to wish you’d never given them your number in the first place; especially if they just won’t take the hint, barraging you with nuisance calls, and sometimes threats.
Number Cloak, a new service, launched by entrepreneurs, Sunny Rai and Kam Thind, could provide a much-needed solution to this dilemma.
The free service enables users to hide their mobile or landline number behind a temporary, secondary number, without the caller being aware. In this way, users can keep their phone number a secret, whilst still being contactable.
If their new acquaintance turns out to be less welcome than they’d originally hoped, the secondary number can be instantly disconnected, preventing those undesirable callers from getting through.
Selena Ratyal, a university student, who uses the Number Cloak service to keep her number safe said: “As part of university life having people asking for your number is quite a common thing.
“Whenever I feel a bit unsure about somebody, I provide them with my Number Cloak. This takes away the shame of me giving them a wrong number or even the guilt of me giving them my actual number. If I get to know them better and trust them, I simply tell them my real number”, she added.
A Number Cloak is quick and easy to set up online, with no lengthy registration process. Users need only provide an email address and their real mobile or landline number, to enable their new, secondary number to be diverted.
There is no billing or charge for receiving calls to a Number Cloak; the service is funded entirely by callers, who are charged 50p per minute from a BT landline, but other networks vary.
