A Call to Arms for Swansea-based School
Pupils from a school in South Wales, swapped their classroom for a day in military barracks.
The year 10 pupils from Swansea-based Ffynone House School, spent the day getting a taste of military life, with the army.
The school was joined by other peers from around South Wales, to take part in team building exercises, discussions and problem solving, at the old Templeton Airfield near Narberth.
The military day out was organised by Ffynone House School, to educate teens about the opportunities available in pursuing a career in engineering, with a particular emphasis on girls.
When pupils arrived at the airfield, they were split into gender groups and mixed with the other participating schools. They then took part in group activities, which included military drills and an assault course.
Ffynone House School pupil, Ruby, said: “It was very cold, but we still managed to have fun and it was great to meet new people.”
The students fought off the autumnal weather and made the most of the day.
Ffynone House School teacher, Steve Hamlyn, said: “The airfield was rather exposed and thus a chill wind brought the temperatures down, but pupils just got on with it and worked well, showing enthusiasm and true Ffynone grit!”
Another pupil, Elizabeth, said: “I felt that it has opened my eyes towards studying engineering later on in life.”
Since opening in 1973, Ffynone House School has earned a reputation for its academic excellence.
The military day took place on October 7.
