The good, the bad and the ugly – 27/01

January 27, 2010

The good –Apple have always know how to play the press, but they have outdone themselves this time. The launch of their new product has been anticipated for weeks and the fact that they have kept it a secret (well they have tried!) has made it all the more so.Ahead of the official launch tonight, it's now been revealed that it's a tablet – fueling yet more speculation.Twitter and the major news sites have been providing full coverage all day!The bad – Cheryl Cole has posted a begging message on her website. The X Factor judge has been nominated for best single at the Brit awards next month, but she's obviously a bit concerned that she won't win...She's put a video on her website telling fans she's relying on them to vote for her, and if begging wasn't enough, she also wants people to tweet the link to the voting page and add 'Team Cheryl' banners to their Faceboo...

The good, the bad and the ugly – 20/01

January 20, 2010

The good – This one is not great PR for the immediate future;but probably a genius idea for future PR....Manchester United FC have taken control of it's players personal social media profiles.A statement on the clubs website announced today that no player will now update their own profile. It sound a bit extreme really, but it will certainly avoid future PR gaffes! The bad – Well again this one is an unusual one, and I cannot quite decide whether it's good or bad!Government officials in South Korea have been told to go home and...well...make babies! In an unusual move health officials in one office will have the lights turned out at 7pm tonight, in an attempt to make them leave work and go home to their partners. The country suffers from one of the lowest birth rates in the world....

Forecasters scared to forecast…has the world gone mad?

January 19, 2010

OK so the Met Office has got it wrong a few times recently...the now notorious 'Barbecue Summer' press release is a fine example. Some scientists believe the organisation needs to analyse why there is always a bias towards higher temperatures. That one's easy though...no one wants to hear that it is going to be cold! What needs to be answered is why the forecasters are held responsible for the weather...they only predict it they don't actually make it!If the Met...

Don’t be stunted for ideas

January 18, 2010

Last week we talked about creating PR opportunities using opinion polls and analyising the data for headlines.  Well this week, I'm going to blog in a similar vain,  but this time through creating PR stunts to make your own news stories.Max Clifford is genius at this; where would Kerry Katona be without him?! The celebrity-world in general has PR stunts down to a fine art and the avenues to facilitate such publicity are part of our everyday life.  You only have to walk down your high street, turn on your TV, listen to the radio or even work in an office to catch headlines contrived through a PR stunt. However, it's not just celebrities and big brand companies that pull off their own story opportunities; any business can orchestrate something to get them a headline, and below are just a few ideas for you to think about:-    Work around an events calendar.  Look at our 'Tips & resources' on the main website to see National eve...
